Stunned Inarticulate
Why We Could Not Explain that Kenneth Starr is a Traitor
by Jeff Koopersmith

Wednesday, February 10th, 1999 -- WASHINGTON (APJP) -- Kenneth W. Starr is now treading on ice less than one millimeter thick.

A growing number of serious and, it seems, proven accusations confront him -- and are about to expose him as a conspiratorial prostitute for a cadre of ultra-right-wing Republicans and religious fanatics who had hoped to overthrow the Clinton Administration in a bloodless coup that left dozens of corpses in its wake.

Senator Tom Harkin attacked Starr yesterday, and accused Starr of violating federal law on more than one occasion. Of course, any thinking American already knew that Starr broke the law numerous times during his years-long investigation of the President.

Now Starr, eager to take the focus off himself, is preparing to indict the President using one of his trumped-up Grand Juries to do his dirty work. As any prosecutor will tell you, a grand jury will indict anyone for anything after hearing a one-sided presentation from even an incompetent prosecutor. And although this is a dangerous avenue for him to ride, Starr, so deluded and so defeated, now feels he has no choice but to indict the President or end up in federal prison himself.

What did Starr do to now become the very enemy of the people he so craftily attempted to prove Bill Clinton was?

First, he spent four years and as much as $60 million hunting down and selectively assembling "facts" on Bill and Hillary Clinton, and destroying and bankrupting their friends and family in the process -- with absolutely nothing to show for it but a made-up series of allegations that Bill Clinton had "destroyed" the legal system of this nation by not telling the "whole truth" about his trysts with Monica.

Next, in a clear violation of Monica Lewinsky's constitutional rights, he kept her from contacting her own lawyers while holding her virtually prisoner in a posh Virginia hotel/shopping center. Starr was able to go after Lewinsky because he had lied to the Justice Department by not informing General Reno that the was acting in collusion with attorneys working for Paula Jones, and -- even worse -- that Starr himself was the partner of another lawyer who was actually writing briefs for Paula Jones, a matter Starr now conveniently claims he was unaware of.

Then, Starr then leaked massive amounts of information, in violation of the law, to Brill's Content in a vain and foolish attempt to get that magazine on his side.

Finally, he leaked his intention to indict the President --in violation of Federal law, prosecutorial guidelines and court regulations -- in a truly sick effort to taint the Senate "jury" deliberating the fate of the Bill Clinton as this article goes to press.

There is no doubt that Starr's contact with lawyers working for Jones was not just collusive but cooperative beyond imagination. In short, Starr and the Jones lawyers set up the President to "lie under oath." When he didn't, and instead chose carefully-worded answers to Jones lawyers' questions, Starr was furious and began to plot a series of "articles of impeachment" that were so flawed as to make the Senate disgusted with the transparency of what could only be characterized as an indictment conceived by Henry VIII.

Already, three leading Republican senators have announced they will vote to acquit the President. They all have their announced reasons, but the true reason is that they realize they Starr and his loyal aides conjured up a fake case against the President, and that the House Judiciary Committee Republicans -- in collusion with the Office of Independent Counsel -- added insult to injury by legitimizing Starr's ludicrous list of "crimes" supposedly committed by Bill Clinton.

Starr's modus operandi became crystal clear this week with the latest absurdity: the investigation of Sidney Blumenthal for "lying under oath" about Monica Lewinsky's reputation at the White House as a "stalker." It now seems a given that Starr knew about the so-called "affidavit" that was going to be offered by ultra-left-wing writer Christopher Hitchens -- a British citizen who makes his living largely by attacking the United States.

The House Managers and their counsel David Schippers appear also to have known about the Hitchens affidavit well in advance of its release.

To top it off, Senator Arlen Specter, who announced yesterday that he would vote to acquit the President, was caught phoning around the country in an attempt to find out if Blumenthal had told other journalists that Lewinsky was a "stalker" or worse. Specter found out -- perhaps to his chagrin -- that Blumenthal had not said this to at least one reporter, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette writer Gene Lyons. Specter was a Senate "referee" during the Blumenthal deposition-- a scam by Schippers and the House Managers to set Blumenthal up to "lie." Blumenthal, of course, saw the writing on the wall as Rep. Lindsey Graham -- a pathetic lawyer -- led Blumenthal into what Graham thought was a perjury trap.

When Hitchens realized that the trap had backfired, he was quick to announce, on national television, that he would not testify to Congress that Blumenthal had spread negative gossip about Lewinsky and that he would "go to jail" rather than nail Blumenthal as a perjurer. The fact that Blumenthal never perjured himself in the first place seems proof positive that a conspiracy of sorts was alive between Starr, Schippers, House Adulterer-in-Chief Henry Hyde, Hitchens, his wife Carol Blue, and others presenting their "airtight" case to the United States Senate.

Even the repugnant Stuart Taylor said last night on PBS' News Hour that he had been calling for Starr to resign for months. Of course Taylor appeared on News Hour to defend Starr and his henchman Jackie Bennett, but his defense was weak and he added these telling words: "Starr won't resign -- he is committed to indicting this President."

We have been warning our readers for weeks that Starr would turn around and indict the President should the Senate acquit him as they will tomorrow. The only thing that has changed is that perhaps as many as 15 Republicans will join Democrats in repudiating the House Managers and Starr along with them.

What is clear is that Kenneth Starr has lost his mind, and did so long ago.

We also believe that Attorney General Reno now has more than enough evidence to at least formally ask Starr for his resignation or, in the absence of same, to dismiss him for cause.

The Justice Department, already investigating him on several fronts, should speed the conclusion of same and indict Starr for perjury, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to falsify his report to the House to "indict" a sitting president for crime she knew were not committed by Bill Clinton nor anyone connected with his administration.

Only then can this circus be thrown out of town. And the voters will take care of Reps. Henry John Hyde, Charles Terrance Canady, James Edward Rogan, Lindsey O. Graham, Robert Laurence Barr, Jr., and the other members of the Republican right who sat on the House Judiciary Committee and then as House Managers -- acting their "roles" in the well of the Senate like puppets controlled by religious zealots and billionaire Neo-Nazis who have been hunting the President for seven long years.

Hillary Clinton was not far wrong when she accused Republicans of being involved in a right wing conspiracy to harm the President.

They were.

But it was worse than the First Lady suspected -- for behind their treachery was a battle for the heart and soul not only of the Republican Party but the American people -- and the battle was based almost entirely on lies which were labeled "circumstantial evidence "in a shameless effort to overthrow the Executive Branch of the United States Government.

Willing "co-conspirators" include the heads of at least three of the four major television networks and several cable channels controlled by those networks, American Spectator magazine and their tax-exempt "educational foundation," the Federalist Society, the Council of Conservative Citizens, Empower America, the Christian Coalition, Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum, the Free Republic web site, and other ultra-right and evangelical religious organizations. Perhaps there was no single or group of puppet masters that ran this bunco operation -- but run it they did until the complexity of their schemes unraveled, revealing the truth.

And America knew it all along.

We were simply stunned inarticulate, and could not explain it.
