Reno Under Fire
by Carol Levy

Friday, May 28, 1999 -- I have no love lost for Janet Reno.

I felt that a strong contributing factor to the Impeachment debacle was a result of her buckling under to pressure from the "right wing-nuts" and appointing Independent Counsel after Independent Counsel. She had the power to say no, and she refused. She still hasn't fired Starr, who is still actively pursuing the Clintons as you read this. By not firing him, she has allowed Starr to potentially continue his activities for years after the Independent Counsel Act dies next month of Grandfather-clause-itis.

Reno has botched so many things that both sides of the political aisle are willing to make her the scapegoat.

But should she be?

It has now been proven that this scandal started in the Carter Administration (among the first to point this out being the CBS Evening News) with most of the espionage taking place during the Reagan and Bush years. nevertheless, top GOP brass -- most notably Richard Shelby -- have been yowling "off with her head" all week.

Well, OK then, Dick. What do you say we gather up all of the muckety-mucks that have run this scam for the last 20 years and throw them all in jail? Hell, that'll give us a running start on the 2000 elections -- by sweeping out the House and Senate! You know, the more that I think about it, the more that I like the idea. It's spring cleaning time, so let's clean up and throw the trash in jail and start over!

Imagine it... we'd be rid of Lott, Barr and the CCC! We'd be rid of Hyde, Burton, Shelby, and the rest of the "do as I say, not as I do" crowd! DeLay could be in charge of the insect control in Supermax. It would be the equivalent of a Congressional "Clean Air" Act! Imagine the possibilities of actually giving the American voters a real chance to have a final revolution in the 20th Century and go into the 21st Century with a clean slate!

Impossible, you say?

No, it's not, because the Republicans are -- for the last time, one can only hope -- overplaying their hand. Shelby called for someone to go to jail, so I say let's start with those who started the Treason Express rolling down the tracks 20 years ago. They, not Attorney General Reno, are the culprits in this case.

And considering many of them are still in power in the House and Senate, it won't be hard to find them.

Then, after all of them are gone, we can talk about whether Reno should resign and for what reasons.

As far as I'm concerned, Reno should have resigned years ago, but I want to see the old heads roll before they allow the new heads to take the fall for them.
