American Politics Journal Seeks Answers
from Bush campaign, Texas Air National Guard
on security clearance questions and answers.

by The Editors

Friday, August 27, 1999 -- New York -- For over a week, the George W. Bush Jr. presidential campaign has been dogged by questions concerning the candidate's rumored drug use -- and criticism of a series of "non-denial denials" by Bush's staff and Bush himself.  The manner in which the Bush campaign has handled the question has led many to conclude that Bush did use one or more illegal drugs at some previous period of his life.

An American Politics Journal reader pointed out in a letter to our editors that

"…[o]ne of the things that will have to be considered before the question of possible youthful drug use by George W. Bush can be put to rest is whether he lied to the Air Force or the Texas Air National Guard about the matter. Fighter pilots, even National Guard fighter pilots, must have security clearances."
This morning, American Politics Journal contacted Karen Hughes, Director of Communications for the Bush campaign, asking for a straight answer to the question of how George W. Bush answered any questions concerning drug use during the process of background clearance as a Texas Air National Guard pilot.

Ms. Hughes was not available at the Bush headquarters in Austin, but a press office staffer assured American Politics Journal that an answer would be forthcoming.

Additionally, American Politics Journal has filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Texas Air National Guard in an effort to find out how George w. Bush answered questions concerning drug use both before and during his service in the Texas Air National Guard during the process of enlistment interviews and security clearance checks.

American Politics Journal will follow up on this story as more information becomes available.
