Lazio to Reenter New York Senate Race?
by David J. Gonzo
Friday, Dec. 3, 1999 -- NEW YORK (APJNS) -- WNBC-TV in New York is reporting this evening that Michael Long, chairman of New York's Conservative Party, has said that Congressman Rick Lazio (R-LI) might reenter the race for the New York Senate seat being vacated at the end of next year by Daniel Patrick Moynihan. The comment came in an interview with WNBC-TV's Gabe Pressman taped for broadcast this coming Sunday morning.
Lazio had been widely though to be planning a run for the seat, but reportedly stepped aside under pressure from the Republican Party at the national and state level to allow New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani an uncontested run for the Republican nomination.
"Starting in January, he may just get back into the race," said Long , "because he does not like the way [Giuliani's campaign] is going... the mayor has not announced." Long went on to castigate Rudy for his failure to address issues of importance to conservatives.
