Guest Editorial Thursday, May 4, 2000 (AmpolNS) -- I have been watching C-SPAN for approximately 10 years -- and I can only conclude that it is a right wing organization. C-SPAN began as an effort to bring "Us, the People" the United States Congress at work -- but as the years slowly passed, I watched C-SPAN become a not-so-veiled propaganda source for a minority of the people here in America: the Republican Party, and liberal- and Democrat-haters. Let's rewind a bit to a related matter -- more related than most are aware. Presidents Reagan and Bush fixed the FCC to relax the rule of law that had prevented people such as Rupert Murdoch from gaining more than 25% of our airwaves and press. Their allies in Congress also gave Murdoch a special congressional hearing to grant him citizenship status so he could come to the States and do his dirty work. Today, I believe Rupert imported tabloid television news in the form of his vision of cable broadcasting -- the end result of "Congress at work!" C-SPAN boasts about being available in every available classroom in America "for free." C-SPAN is the only broadcaster allowed into Congress full time, and they control what we see and when we see it. They control how loud or how disruptive their programs will be by using sound filters and camerawork. Note that Hitler's first victims in Germany were the CHILDREN of Germany. He gave them uniforms and shoes and fed them good food. He got them involved -- then he got their parents, and the rest is history. I viewed reruns of Senator John McCain's campaign bid on C-SPAN well after it he had suspended it -- while the cable outlet virtually ignored Al Gore's campaign. They don't care what we think or if we think -- when the media, including C-SPAN, says the campaign's over, then it's over! C-SPAN indeed has a mission -- and that mission is to bring us propaganda in the form of "free speech." The problem with this is that the only free speech that is heard or broadcast on C-SPAN is whatever they deign to allow us to see or hear. Here's more food for thought: recently on C-SPAN, I saw mention of a poll that "showed...Hollywood type" voters who are supporters for Gore are "mostly actors." Am I to assume that the "Hollywood types" who donate to Covert Candidate Shrub are broadcasters and radio stations? C-SPAN just celebrated its 20th year on the air. Think back to what was happening in the U.S. in 1979 through '81, while what I sometimes call "See-SPAM" was being created: an election year was looming, along with Ronald Reagan and the spin men on his campaign team; hostages in Beirut; hostages in Teheran; the October Surprise; the treasonous then-Colonel Ollie North and a Covert Army doing dirty work in Chile, Panama, and elsewhere in Latin and South America. Within a few years, we would begin hearing vague word of an "Iran-Contra" scandal. I believe C-SPAN was set up to be "Big Brother" for REX-1984. For those of you not familiar with "REX84," this FEMA-related program was established to produce a covert cadre led by Ollie North to subvert the Constitution and arrest and perhaps "dispose of" Americans who didn't agree with the political agenda of the controlling right wing (i.e., martial law, "law administered by domestic military forces when war or serious internal dissension prevents civil authority from ruling"). The only person to question the treasonous North about his REX84 ties was then-Rep. Jack Brooks (D-TX). Sen. Daniel Inouye (R-HI), who said, "We need to not talk about this, some things are secret and should be talked in chambers" -- stifled him. Jack tried to push the question, but was up against a wall of cover-ups. Toward the end of Ollie North's congressional Iran-Contra testimony, Jack Brooks read a stunning list of real crimes that the Nixon/Ford and Reagan/Bush administrations had committed and carried out with the active participation of the treasonous North and his band of evil players. But many Senators and the Reagan Administration itself were in overdrive trying to cover it up! And many key Reagan players got away with it thanks to George H. Bush's Christmas Pardons. I remember watching Ronald Reagan on CNN's Larry King Live in the early winter of 91'. He answered questions fully. His wife "Nasty" wasn't there to feed him answers -- he was well-spoken and looked great! His handlers wanted you to think Reagan was a lousy B actor. The truth is, Reagan was a fabulous A-list actor as long as he knew where to stand and had his notes or lines! If George H. Bush had won in '92, Reagan's legacy would be protected -- the lies and murders would have been covered up! But it just didn't work out that way -- Bill Clinton won. Ronnie went into "protection," getting sicker and sicker, less likely to stand trial for the crimes of his Administration. As the years passed...well, we all know what happened. Remind you of what Pinochet is doing? If you manage to get old enough, you won't be prosecuted -- nor will those under your watch who participated in crimes, such as ex-Colonel North. C-SPAN allows viewers to ask questions of elected officials, members of the press, and policy "experts." There are three lines: one each for Democrats, Republicans, and independents. I like to keep track of C-SPAN callers. I myself call in about every 30 days -- that is their rule. Here is just one example of what one sees and hears from these callers: Sen. Max Baucus discussed China trade legislation on the March 28, 2000 edition of C-SPAN's "talk" show, "Washington Journal." Republican line: six long and windy calls -- most of them directed at Bill Clinton and Al Gore instead of the issue being discussed. Democrat line: three longer and even windier calls -- all claimed that they used to be Democrats. But there were also three very positive calls on the issue -- one asked about the Conason/Lyons book "The Hunting of the President". The independent line had three angry Pat Buchanan types -- they were also attacking Clinton/Gore rather than discussing the issue at hand. This is about par for course for Washington Journal: a 12-to-3 bias favoring conservative Americans who hate the President. Brian Lamb -- or, as I have named him, "Bias" Lamb, is King of C-SPAN. I remember him actually asking earlier this year, "WHO is RUPERT MURDOCH?" I screamed back at the television, "The guy who finances your paycheck, YOU CHUMP!" Lamb and his on-air talent all use the same "finger of fate" for the Democrats or liberals who call into the program. If you try to stand up for the President or the VP or the Democratic Party, it sounds as if the caller hangs up, but the reality is they cut these callers off. They also try to trick viewers by skipping callers, pretending the caller has hung up; then, when they go to the next caller, the host doesn't reveal the caller's identity, which means the viewer can only conclude the caller's "party allegiance" by the caller's attitude and "hate" factor. If you want to talk about the President's genitalia, or Miss Lewinsky, or the "fact" the Clinton "is a rapist" -- well, gee, the host will let you go on and on and on! At the "high-minded" C-SPAN, the ClintonGate Factor rules. C-SPAN boasts about their products, including the famous Presidents Series that went directly into classrooms -- but they didn't spare our children one bit of X-rated MonicaGate detail and other filth from hater-guests-callers and hosts. This went into the classrooms all over America. This is so similar to Hitler's media control strategy -- for his small but loud and well-funded herd. "We are in your cars, your kitchens, your classrooms, where ever a satellite beam can go." Is that reminiscent of 1984 or what? Literally? The aforementioned REX84 program was supposed to be kicked into gear after the GOP takeover of Congress and the election of Ronnie (and "Nasty") Reagan. People seem to forget that Reagan had a Republican Senate for 6 of his years in Office. But as the investigations of Iran/Contra got fired up, the mission failed when willing fall-guy North got busted! But their broadcast wing is still alive -- and kicking. For example, if you want to see Al Gore or our President speak at a rally or a campaign stop, you must stay up all night long. They also schedule congressional hearings that do not favor the likes of Rep. Dan "Melon Man" Burton on late at night also. If the hearings go well for Rep. Melon -- well, we will see the reruns in prime time hours. When John Huang testified, he could barely understand the "Democrats' English". He needed to confer with his lawyers or interpreters. But he always understood the "Republicans' English!" He has been on every exploding head show on TV and speaks very good English. The handling of Huang during the hearings reminded me of Rosa Lopez's appearance during the O.J. Simpson criminal trial, in a way -- remember what Marcia Clark and her team did to that poor old lady? She was only trying to tell what she saw. They went through four different "interrupters" before they quashed her testimony. Lopez reportedly had seen Mark Fuhrman plant the "bloody glove." Maybe she wasn't go to say that -- but we will never know, because the corrupt LAPD was making sure Ms. Lopez would not give her version of what she really saw happen that night. Ah, but I digress! I also found it criminal that C-SPAN (and the broadcast networks) ignored our President's trip to Asia while giving us wall-to-wall coverage of a Pope who can barely form a complete sentence. They would rather show reruns of the NON-CANDIDATE McCain or "Covert" Candidate Shrub before a controlled audience, via his own broadcasting lapdogs, than show us our President. Then they find someone to complain about the millions of dollars our President is spending. They want to spin us to be resentful of his travels. They want us to risk the First Lady's security by complaining about her use of Air Force aircraft in her campaign travels (keep in mind that 50-plus secret service agents guarded the Reagan ranch 24/7 while Ronnie and Nasty were in Office -- that is eight years of serious money). I believe that C-SPAN was created to be used as a propaganda tool for Americans who would rather round up people like me and lock us up or kill us. They live for WAR -- they make their money on WAR PRODUCTS or cleanups after the fact. But our world has changed -- it is small and more connected than we ever knew possible. There is no place to hide anymore. These angry old GOPers and Blue Dog Democrats, who are nothing more than Clinton haters, want to live in the past. If there is a Democrat on C-SPAN, he or she is either too timid to take on right wingers or they get SCREAMED OUT as if they were at a dinner party from hell. There is no balance and there is no fairness about it. This is the de facto takeover of hard-right media, publicly financed, in an age when large corporate media ha a right-leaning bias and continues to be attacked by arch-conservatives as "liberal -- after all, the phrase "liberal media" was made popular by former Vice President Spiro Agnew to deflect attention from his own illegal deeds! Well, the right's days are numbered -- if not over. We are not complacent -- and this time we have the Internet to contact those who do tell the truth and present us the facts so we can decide. If we can take back Congress and retain the White House, we can then demand that C-SPAN get back to reality and give us back our airwaves. We should also tighten up the FCC and get rid of foreign money that is indirectly involved in our political races, via the likes of Rupert "Proud American" Murdoch. Let's return to the days when the GOP would get an hour on some show, then the Democrats got an equal hour to respond. That is the rule of law that Reagan and Bush subverted so that it is now all GOP all the time, all in the name of Personal Opinion! We can make them clean up their act. We don't have Clinton/Gore Fatigue -- we have MEDIA FATIGUE! I hope to live to see the day that people like Bias Lamb and the Melon Man get their just rewards. As far as I am concerned, C-SPAN is guilty of sedition. That is the word used to describe stirring up political dissent by sowing mass confusion and disruption among the people to sway an election or to move an evil agenda. It is a crime -- against the people and against our nation. Let this be the first thing we do when we take back our country: MEDIA REFORM!
