Send the Highest Court a Message
GO TO WESTERN UNION!
by Mac MacArthur
December 10, 2000 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. -- If you think that the Supreme Court’s cessation of the ballot count in Florida means it's all over for Al Gore, think again.
There is a chance that even Anton Scalia will give the Gore team a fair shake – but first, let's make certain the Court knows what we, the people, think.
Now, this may be a sham tactic by the Chief Justice, but I doubt it. I think the court will look at the "undercounted" Florida ballots to see if they can tell – at least on some of these ballots – what the intent of the voters was.
I am personally disappointed that the Supreme Court has not requested the ballots from Palm Beach County -- especially the ones that elderly voters, undereducated people and even educated but flustered people like me (who accidentally punched for Buchanan – or Buchanan-Gore, hitting two holes with those now all too well styli.)
We shall see.
But what you should do – as Americans – is this:
Go to the Western Union web site at http://www.westernunion.com.
Click on “eCOMMUNICATIONS” at the top bar of the page.
Fill out the form they ask – (now you can easily send hand delivered telegrams).
Send a telegram to
Chief Justice William Rehnquist
Supreme Court of the United States
One First Street N.E.
Washington, DC 20543.
Make certain it is DELIVERED, not phoned in.
The telegram, if less than 100 words, will cost only $9.95.
And it’s worth ten bucks to tell the Court what you think.
You can still phone in telegrams – but it costs $ 21.00. If you wish to do that, simply call information for you local Western Union office.
Tell them that perhaps they are too isolated from the rise of neofascism that has occurred in this
nation during the last 20 years and that they must do something about the Bush crime family.
Tell the court you believe in them, and that you also believe that all ballots should be counted.
You should add that the court should also direct the U.S. Congress to make certain that within two years there shall be voting devices in all states which are inexpensive, impossible to defraud, and easy to understand. I for once would like photographs of candidates as well as party logos on these ballots. Yes, I feel the old paper ballot is the best. However, you can decide what you write.
I might also add a short statement that if the court should disallow this count they will be splitting the nation in half – as badly as just before the Civil War – and making the Supreme Court – at least appear like the political hack of the Republican Party.
That is all I have to say.
I haven’t slept in nearly 5 weeks. I am exhausted fighting these fascists. So, please, take my advice and send a telegram to the court. There is no other inexpensive way to contact them before they rule -- and there is no more effective way to send them a printed message.
For those of you that think that the Supreme Court is not swayed by national opinion – think again. In fact, the Supreme Court is especially swayed by public opinion on issues political – they have proved that over and again during more than two centuries of debate and action.
Your voice will not be ignored and will be reported to all the Justices by their clerks.
This is the telegram I sent today. Don't copy it -- for it and your telegram will lose its meaning.
Mr. Chief Justice:
I have stood and watched my Party destroyed by militant, ultra-right, absurdly young or greed-filled members of Congress. I have watched the lynching of a President. Now I watch the theft of an election. You must, and you can, lawfully, and might I add, rather easily put the nation’s mind to rest and vote to make certain that ALL the ballots are counted -- by hand -- in Florida. You are not a "political appointment." Your job allows hand slapping of politics and politicians. Do this, and do this quickly before you divide this nation -- irreparably -- in half.
