Vicente Fox Vs. George W. Bush
By Mike Kress

Wednesday, March 28, 2001 (APJP) -- While watching
Nightline's five part series on the drug war last
week, I became fascinated by Mexico's president,
Vicente Fox.

Here is a man elected by the Mexican people to be
president of a historically corrupt nation, who by all
accounts and evaluations is indeed honorable and
moral. President Fox is well spoken, honest,
forthright, and articulate. He speaks English with an
ease and familiarity that suggests learned study and
an inquiring, intellectual mind. He openly admits to
the problems confronting Mexico; he does not
equivocate or obfuscate. Mr. Fox seems to have a great
amount of integrity and little egotism. He has staffed
his cabinet with people who have little or no
experience in government to ensure they are not
corrupted and can think in terms of what is best for
Mexico, not themselves. While his presidency is young,
President Fox has raised the hopes of Mexico's
citizens by tackling problems no other Mexican
president has before.

Only time will tell for sure, but the future is
looking brighter for Mexico.

On the other hand, in America we have a so-called
president who was not even elected, but rather
selected by a treasonous, corrupt, partisan Supreme
Court - which used the 14th Amendment to
disenfranchise the very people it was supposed to
protect. Thanks in part to fraud and racist/classist
discrimination in some states, America has a so-called
president who is turning back the clock on what little
progress we've made in race relations, economic
revival, environmental protection, civil rights, human
rights, women's rights, and worker's rights.

Unlike Vicente Fox, our so-called president, George W.
Bush, cannot coherently form one sentence -- let alone
put together two -- despite the fact that he grew up
speaking the English language. He does not read books
or policy reports, delegates almost all his duties,
and rarely works weekends, clearly demonstrating not
only his life pattern of avoiding hard work, but also
his shallow intellect. Bush cannot address any issue
confronting America without stumbling, obfuscating,
dissembling, or referring the questioner to someone
else. Having lived his life in a cradle of wealth,
privilege, and political cronyism, Bush wears an
arrogant smirk on his face in place of a smile.

Bush is turning America over to right-wing religious
organizations and conservative, tax-exempt "think
tanks" -- not to mention the corporations that control
the aerospace, defense, energy, oil, medical and
pharmaceutical industries. A bought and paid for
candidate, chosen over John McCain for his talent as a
shmoozing stooge and puppet, Bush is a multi-national
corporation's wet dream. He is realizing his goal of
tanking the U.S. economy to ram through his Welfare
For The Wealthy, and an effective campaign reform bill
will never see his signature. Under Bush, the
influence of the wealthy and the well connected will
continue unabated.

To secure a federal government by the right-wing, for
the right-wing, and of the right-wing, Dick Cheney
(our de facto Prime Minister) and the Heritage
Foundation have staffed the Bush administration with
men and women whose government resumes can be carbon
dated. With fossilized dinosaurs like Sec. of Defense
Rumsfeld, and fresher conservative fixtures like
Collin Powell, this neo-Cold War administration is
corrupted by donations, stock-options, previous
employment, and an undemocratic ideology that force an
exclusive allegiance to the conservative
establishment.

Bush spoke incessantly about restoring integrity and
honor to the White House, thus we can all rest easy
knowing he will have sex with only his wife. However,
by undoing or weakening so many laws that protect "We
The People" in favor of corporate demands and the
conservative right-wing, Bush has proven what a fraud
he is and how little integrity he has. Every action he
has taken thus far contradicts his redundant claims of
being compassionate. Every move made by the Bush
administration has been formulated to block, disrupt,
dismantle, or destroy government policies that are by
definition "compassionate". As a result, an
unmistakable air of pessimism, cynicism, and
discontent is spreading across the United States.

Though Bush's reign is still young, the future looks
bleak for America.

What America needs is Vicente Fox.
