Right Wing "Misleadership" Alienates Republicans
by Mike Hersh

From Monday's Washington Post: "In 2000, the voters in
17 out of 25 of the nation's most affluent counties --
all with high percentages of people with advanced degrees
-- cast majorities for Al Gore, sometimes by more than 70
percent...."

LA Weekly Writer Johnny Angel adds: "In 1988, Bush beat
Dukakis among the wealthy by 25 points--in 2000, his son
beat Gore by [only] 7 points among the wealthy."

Wednesday, March 28, 2001 (APJP) -- I keep reading how we Democrats are
dead.

Wrong.

We have never had more life.

Why? Because our opponents -- extremist "conservatives" -- have bitten
off too much this time, and are already choking on it. Look at the above
facts. Before we give our political opposition the Heimlich Manoeuver,
we should take satisfaction in this trend.

Wall Street has shown no confidence in the Bush Occupation. The best-
informed, wealthiest Republicans are shunning their party's extreme right
wing "misleadership." Many more will follow -- the process will accelerate
because right wing reaction to dissent and defeat is even more extremism.
The mass media is currently loath to report the full story, but we can
deduce the truth by reading between the lines.

Tosay, radical right wingers are giving license to their most extreme
tendencies. Most of us would rather keep thinking Republican leaders are
not such bad people, just that they are a bit too conservative. Perhaps
they used to be, but for over three decades a malignancy has consumed the
GOP -- the sickness of overstepping, lying, transgressing, and assaulting
too much of what we Americans hold dear.

Look at right's record during that period:

Officials working for Nixon illegally contacted the South Vietnamese in 1968
and delayed the end to Vietnam war so that Nixon could win the White House.
Watergate, IRS and CIA witch hunts, break-ins, bribes, hush money, and
intimidation followed -- in a vain effort to keep Nixon in the Oval Office.

Recessions in 1972, 1982, and 1992 drove down American workers' wages.

In 1980, Reagan's people -- including George Herbert Walker Bush -- illegally
and treasonously arranged with the government of Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran
to delay the release of American hostages being held in that country. The
Iran-Contra deal paid off the Ayatollah -- and encouraged right-wingers in
Central and South America to flood American streets with TONS of cocaine to
support their death squads.

Former President Bush sent billions of dollars worth of American equipment to
Saddam Hussein at taxpayers' expense.

Newt Gingrich declared war on the American people as he shut down the Federal
government -- and subsequently worked to foist the bogus Lewinsky impeachment
witch hunt on the press and public.

And, in their latest criminal action, right-wingers engineered Votergate and
the illegal, immoral actions of the Bush Occupation.

Strung together as a chain of ruthless, anti-American actions, the pattern is
clear: people of good will -- including Republicans -- recoil from these acts,
and do not want to believe that GOP leaders actually engage in these dirty
activities. But the above acts are just standard operating procedure for the
extreme right wing.

That cannot continue.

The right wing extreme is once again causing a recession to slash salaries
and increase their power over American families. They want to roll back
advances in public safety, equal rights, peace and prosperity. They want to
invade the most private parts of Americans' lives, but let polluters and
corporate criminals off the hook.

Who supports that?

The rank-and-file of the GOP? For the most part, no.

The answer is the GOP leadership -- as opposed to well-meaning people who
call themselves Republicans.

The leadership are ruthless, hateful bigots and criminals. As outrageous
and disgusting as it was, NOTHING in the right wing election theft is new
or should have been unexpected. This is a group that will stop at nothing
to take power.

And how are they justifying their agenda? With so-called Christian,
compassionate conservatism.

People are seeing the hard-right agenda for what it really is: nothing moral
or Christian or compassionate. For example, W. Bush honestly thinks ALL Jews
and Moslems should actually go to hell. Pat Robertson's vicious hatred of
even Protestants who do not follow his intolerant strain of antichristianity
is another. The dark alliance between right wingers and bogus messiah Sun
Myung Moon illustrates just how antichristian the right is.

How can any real Christian support Moon? I would love to see someone ask W.
Bush why he is so close to Moon -- and whether or not he thinks Moon really
is the Messiah! If he says no, Bush should then be asked why his family
acts like a pack of errand boys for a fraudulent felon who calls himself a
Jesus?

Bush, Roberston, Moon and other antichristians are misleading well-
intentioned, true Christians. People who know their history recognize that
this alliance of GOP and Religious Reich hate, fear and persecution is
actually a formula for the ages -- specifically, the Dark Ages. Power-mad
deceivers like Bush, Roberston and Moon adeptly twist the Bible. They
manipulate people of faith and create fear and mistrust with their gross
distortions of religious doctrine -- all in support of oppression. The Bible
describes this technique clearly. What sane person wants these lunatics
speaking for them? Who trusts these hateful people?

The irony is that blind support by the hard right for "baby-killer," AWOL,
coke-head, D-Dubya-I Bush proved they're hypocrites on "moral" issues.
Moral, thinking people do NOT support the backwards, evil leaders of the GOP.
After all, who REALLY wants to refight the Scopes monkey trial? Who wants
to impose a narrow, oppressive strain of prayer and religion on their fellow
Americans in direct violation of the Constitution?

Most of us don't. Including most Republicans.

We must sound the alarm to sane Republicans and ally with them to drive a
wedge between the majority of Americans and the greedy, immoral, downright
fascist GOP leadership. They will join Democrats and independents fighting
extremist policies that even most Republicans do not want.

We will defeat the hypocritical Republican leadership as they try to loot
Medicare and Social Security. We will not let them steal the hard-earned
money working families invested in a hard-right orchestrated attempt to
fund a huge, inflationary, high-interest-rate, deficit-creating giveaway
for the nonproductive, idle rich. We will never stop fighting.

Our job is to keep stressing these points: admit that Democrats have flaws,
but that only the most naive, deluded or foolish person thinks we are not
better in EVERY way than the corrupt, shortsighted, right wing "GOP-ocrite"
leaders.

We don't work with false messiahs like Moon who help North Koreans obtain
nuclear weapons on the one hand, and claim we are a "Christian coalition"
with the other. We do not try to impose hatred and intolerance and then
call others' "faith" into question. We do not use the IRS and hired thugs
to intimidate, order break-ins, and rifle through files looking for blackmail
sammunition -- and then attack others' character.

We do not steal elections. We do not throw innocents off the voting rolls.
We do not pervert our institutions and traditions for the sake of personal
or partisan gain -- and then pretend to be patriotic. We do not ally with
narco-terrorists as addictive drugs devastate our society. We do not
conspire with hostage-taking terrorists and rogue states to "win" elections
-- and then call others weak.

We do not sell our soul to gun-nut bombers or militia stooges, HMOs, and
other paranoid, greedy, or selfish people who promote policies which
actually KILL men, women and children every day and claim they are some sort
of "moral majority."

It is getting almost impossible for most Republicans -- those not locked
into right-wing ideology -- to go along with the ever-lengthening list of
crimes and atrocities committed in their name by hard-right Republican
Confederates trying to divide and conquer America. Sane, sensible
Republican are sickened by the betrayals -- of their interests and their
nation. Every day, more Republicans tire of Bush and his puppet-masters
playing him -- and them -- for saps.

But most Republicans remain slumbering, not believing the criticisms of
their party's extreme right wing in the mass media.

They practice denial. We will ring the alarm bell. We will awaken them.

Together, people of good will shall throw the right wing extremists out of
government and politics, retake their party, and help us retake our nation.
