2a. The Post's analysis was larded with heavy-handed references to the "Marxism" and "socialism" of Chavez, a clear attempt to label him an enemy of the state. The more obvious comparison to a Huey Long sort of mishmash populism evidently eluded them. As the Los Angeles Times conceded, "Despite a rhetoric that borrowed heavily from Marxist ideology, Chavez did not nationalize any businesses, or do much to better the lot of the overwhelming number of Venezuelans who are poor. When the country slid into a recession last year, Chavez slashed government spending, following the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund", Hector Tobar, Patrick J. 3a. As recently as September 21, 2000, long after the correctness of the Pillsbury report was obvious, Schmidt was peddling in an online chat the tale that the report was "incomplete" and "rendered … irrelevant" by the Rose law firm billing records. In reality, the essence of her reporting had by then been totally discredited, while the Pillsbury report remained.
