History

merican Politics Journal was born of the idea of one Washington lobbyist who left practice -- fed up with the life he was leading and the men and women he interacted with in Congress and at the White House. In 1988, this lobbyist started a posted message board on the then-new CompuServe online service. In 1990 the message board and a weekly update on the political scene moved to an independent Internet service provider. For years this lobbyist wrote and edited the magazine alone.

In 1995, others got involved -- some writing under their own bylines, others writing under pseudonyms.

American Politics Journal is made possible by the volunteer efforts of many individuals. Articles, illustrations, photographs and insider information are all provided free of charge from political activists, Congressional staff, insiders with both parties, military personnel, and others who work full-time for the federal government. Their insight is invaluable.  Other volunteers man reader services and assist students with research.

Finally, and most importantly, thousands of Americans who rely on American Politics Journal for a moderate and often humorous look at Beltway shenanigans provide the funds for ongoing maintenance of the site, the hardware needed to keep this daily ongoing, and the feedback the editors and writers value.

With over 39 million hits per year, American Politics Journal has become the fastest-growing political site on the Internet!

Editorial Philosophy

American Politics Journal is a web-based journal of opinion, mixing information and policy ideas with in-your-face humor -- laughter with an edge.

Our commentary has been appreciated by most of our readers -- ranging from working men and women to journalists and politicians.  It has also been the target of malicious and organized hate mail campaigns -- and even death threats. Yes, we know that comes with the territory (and we do, by the way, take the threats seriously -- as at least one recently incarcerated imbecile will tell you).

We have also been criticized quite vociferously since the 200 election by liberals who generally side with our editorial direction and opinion -- including a few of the nation's most prominent columnists, men and women whose writing we admire -- for being "mean-spirited" and engaging in "name-calling."

We can only reply to those who criticize our penchant for poking fun at political Luddites, appointed religious extremists, Iran-Contra figures given a "new lease on life" in Junior's regime, and maniacs who control America's conservative movement -- including the illegitimately selected George DumbBellYuh Bush (we know... there we go again) --  that we subscribe to the doctrine of columnist Paul Kirkpatrick, who could not have put it better:

"I will give our new president the same level of support and encouragement that was given to the current administration by such luminaries as Tom DeLay, Trent Lott, Rush Limbaugh, Richard [Mellon] Scaife, Ted Olson, [Paul Greenberg] and, of course, George W. himself.

"In other words, I will badmouth the president daily, I will work in whatever small way I can to defeat and undermine his programs and agenda...and I will criticize and ridicule his wife and children at every opportunity."

The same goes for the neo-fascist cabal that tried to "bring down" President Bill Clinton, including but certainly not limited to two men that we believe committed multiple instances of perjury before Congress: William "Lie about Justice Jackson" Rehnquist and Ted "Arkansas Project? What Arkansas Project?" Olson.

We mock and ridicule their views, their overweening arrogance, their proto-fascist leanings -- because that is the simple, naked political direction underlying their extremist views, lawless actions, and plans to politicize the American judicial system at its highest levels.

American Politics Journal has vigorously defended and will continue to defend the last elected President of the United States, Bill Clinton, against those forces that attempted to destroy him -- politically and personally.  Their actions would have made Stalin or Goebbels proud -- and that alone says more than enough about their morals, their characters, their animus.

Despite the claims of many of our critics and detractors, who are not "misinformed" but liars to a man, there has been no link between our editors and publishers and the Clinton White House -- nor was there any need for communication with White House staff on matters dealing with the Clintons' manufactured "troubles."  Our contributors and staff include Republicans, Democrats and Independents. Our readers are inclusive as well.

And it should be pointed out that American Politics Journal 's editorial board has consistently, over the years, taken positions against President Clinton -- including his wrongheaded position on welfare reform, certain issues concerning foreign policy, key aspects of so-called "campaign finance reform," and specific tax issues.

We would also add that our decision in 1997 to publish the work of David Corn, the gifted author and brilliant and outspoken commentator on Beltway matters who has often been critical of President Clinton, is proof positive that we are not attempting to act as a blind defender of Clinton.

Corn, whose archive of 1997-1999 Loyal Opposition columns for the independent weekly NY PRESS can be found on this web site, remains a progressive unafraid to speak his mind and, as Washington editor of The Nation and a regular contributor to TomPaine.com, stands out as one of America's brightest, most vital and independent-minded progressives.

We are more concerned than ever with the "New Moralism" preached by self-appointed "Virtues Führer" William Bennett, "Jaaay-Zus" John Ashcroft, and some members of Congress -- most notably the so-called "Class of 1994."

American Politics Journal will never endorse the policy of any elected official who seeks to foist their views on morality or religion on the American people -- including so-called "faith-based" programs sanctioned by the Federal government which are nothing more than stalking horse for proselytizing and lining the pockets of televangelists and businessmen disguised as clergymen. We consider this an unconstitutional assault on Americans' already unparalleled reputation as defenders of good.

We believe that there are men and women in this country who have hidden behind the shield of Judeo-Christian values while at the same time literally stealing money from "believers" through unfettered televangelism and the recent construction of entire broadcasting networks devoted to shaping the policy of the United States through absurd reconstruction and intentional misrepresentation of the Old and New Testament. Make no mistake -- these men and women are hate-mongers and they have succeeded in electing a small but vocal group of elected officials who must toe the line or be threatened with defeat. Included in this group is the leadership of the Christian Coalition, which if you examine and analyze their guidelines prove to be nothing much more than an extremist organization formed to extort elected officials for their votes. Also in this group are a series of television personalities who hold themselves out to the viewing public as men of the cloth -- but are, in truth, men of the checkbook.

It is these men and women who helped launch the nine-year-long attack on Bill and Hillary Clinton. After the President and the First Lady attempted to redesign the health care system in America some seven years ago, a strong stealth alliance between the television pulpit and many corporate boardrooms was born.

Some corporations, understandably fearful of huge tax increases needed to pay for 50 million men, women and children who now have no medical care, began supporting enemies of the Clintons and the Democratic Party.

Many of these same parties engaged in some of the most morally reprehensible and intellectually fraudulent conduct of the 2000 election cycle by trying to label Gore as a liar.   They have not been -- and will not be -- let off the hook in the coming years by APJ.

We can and do editorialize against the kind of greed that would move anyone to destroy the reputation of an otherwise beneficial administration -- one that, we might point out, has been particularly beneficial to the corporate bottom line.
